RANK STRANGERS - STANLEY BROTHERS 1960

Though many artists have recorded the song 'Rank Stranger" over the years, this rendition remains the definitive version.

Carter Stanley takes lead while his brother Ralph took on the refrain in the typical Bluegrass style. The sparse instrumentation adds to the song's mournful tone.

The meaning of the song has often been debated. To some, its narrator is a Civil War veteran returning from battle to find his world not only permanently changed but strangely alien as well.

My own father fought in the Second World War - 1940-45 inclusive. He was a loner, as am I, as was my late son Ricky.

It is a tale of isolation, of time passing and speaks to the unrequited loneliness of those who are homesick but have no home.

This is another rendition by Ricky Skaggs
